Chinese lattice Pattern--"Ice Ray"
View from the garden, 2006
"The Chinese Garden is a place for solitary or social contemplation of nature."
In his book, Chinese Lattice Designs, Daniel Dye comments on this particular lattice pattern: "To
appreciate the designs...one needs to see ice forming on quiet water on a cold night. Straight lines
meet longer lines, making unique and beautiful patterns. The Chinese term this ice-line, or lines
formed by cracking ice...." He goes on to say that these patterns are not symmetrical, but there is
balance. "This type of window pattern has been used since before the Christian era."
